The Greenhouse Effect and Global Warming

Attorney Paul Sternberg Greenhouse Effects By Raguraman Gurusamy.

The gases that absorb radiation are called greenhouse gases. The greenhouse gases include the gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, or water vapor that contribute to the warming of the atmosphere of the Earth by reflecting radiation from the surface of the Earth. They keep the Earth warm. They naturally exist in the atmosphere, heating the atmosphere of the Earth by trapping energy that originally comes from the Sun. Due to this, the temperature of the Earth increases. This is known as the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse gases play the vital role in raising the temperature of the Earth. If the greenhouse gases are not there on the surface of the Earth, the Earth would be as cold as the surface of the Moon. The temperature would be around -18 degree Celsius. Actually, the characteristic surface temperature of the Earth is around 15 degree Celsius. It is now worried that the warming effects are being lamentably increased, inducing climate changes and melting of polar icecaps.

All the countries are keenly watching the warming effect. Almost all the countries are taking effort to measure the climatic changes taking places in the globe; however, the measurement is clearly showing that the global climate is keep on changing. In the past 100 years, the atmosphere of the Earth has warmed up by about half a degree Celsius. In addition, during this time human beings have also been released extra greenhouse gases. These gases have been produced as a result of burning the fossil fuels like coal, gas, and oil.

It is evident that the artificial emissions of greenhouse gases, by the activity of increased use of fossil fuels, are accountable for some of the warming of the global climate during the 20th century. The additional greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere absorb more energy and consequently increase the greenhouse effect. Due to this, the global temperature can raise further.

Besides by burning the fossil fuels, the greenhouse gases have also produced by the exhausts of motor vehicles. The destruction of rain forests is also responsible for the release of carbon dioxide, which in turn causes global warming. There are also many other natural ways by which the climate can be changed. The gases released from active volcanoes mix with the water vapor present in the air to create aerosols, and cool the atmosphere. The changes in the energy of the Sun and the flow of the ocean also affect the climate of the Earth. If the Earth keeps on to warm as predicted by the climate models, the temperature of the surface of the Earth may be three degree Celsius warmer than the current temperature by the year 2100. Due to this sudden change in the temperature, many ecosystems would get affected; which in turn affects many species of animals and plants.

How Energy Use and Climate Change Are Linked

Attorney Paul Sternberg and Climate Change Are Linked By Wilbur Kilroy

As countries mature and become more industrialized, their need for energy increases dramatically. They require fuel to run their production plants and electricity for their equipment, as well as natural gas and oil to heat their homes. The use of other petroleum-based fuels such as gasoline increases as more of the population can afford to purchase vehicles. All of these forms of energy rely heavily on production and refining methods that produce emissions that can further increase the planets greenhouse effect.

The greenhouse effect is a scientific principle that governs how much heat is trapped by the layer of gas that surrounds our planet. This layer of gas permits sunlight to pass through it on the way to earth and when this sunlight strikes the planet it is converted to infrared radiation (heat) that would normally be reflected back up into space. The good news for us is that this layer of gas will actually trap this heat and keep our planet warm. The challenge is that many of the gases produced for the generation of electricity and the processing of fuels will settle into this layer of gas in the atmosphere and increase its ability to retain heat. By retaining more of this heat it makes our planet warmer than normal and can have a dramatic impact on our weather and climate.

As our planet’s energy needs increase, more of these greenhouse gasses are produced and the average temperature of our planet increases as a result. This is the main force behind global warming, which tends to be a very divisive topic among most people. Even though this is a very contested subject by laymen, most major scientific opinion is that the increase of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere is a direct result of our planets growing need for energy, and global warming is a real result of this change. This is one reason why there has been a renewed interest in alternative energy solutions for our electricity and other fuels that could help reduce our need for traditional fossil fuels.

The benefits to developing alternative energy solutions for our homes are many, and all of them can help reduce both the financial and environmental cost and also lower the impact our current solutions have on global warming. The advantage to using both solar and wind systems to generate electricity is that they rely on a power source that is renewable and available all over the world. This power source is also free and will produce no adverse affects as part of it’s conversion of either sunlight or wind to electricity. As a result, this helps reduce the adverse affects that traditional power conversion technology has on global warming. It also provides a less expensive source for this much-needed power and reduces our dependency on these shrinking and expensive fossil fuels.

Understanding that current energy use and climate change are directly related is the first step in solving the problem. Reducing our current dependence on traditional fossil fuels to power our homes and cars by find alternative energies can have a dramatic and positive impact on global warming. These alternative energy solutions are available today and both solar power and wind power can help you do your part and also help you spend less for the power you need for your home.

World Needs Renewable Energy to Fight Climate Change?

Paul Sternberg Attorney Renewable Energy By Ned Hall

Climate change is perhaps the biggest environmental challenge in history of mankind, and world leaders still hesitate whether to make significant emission cuts like many scientists expect them to do. Almost all politicians agree that each country needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions but once it comes down to actually making legally binding agreement politicians usually turn other face saying how at the present time, industry is too weak for such radical measures.

We all know what we need to do to halt climate change. The answer to this question is very simple, decrease CO2 emissions. CO2 emissions are mostly the result of fossil fuels burning. So what we need to do is decrease the use of fossil fuels to satisfy our hunger for energy. The easiest solution for doing so is to develop renewable energy sector such as wind, solar and geothermal power that emit very little or no emissions. Solution sounds fairly easy, but sadly reality is much more complex.

Renewable energy sector despite having so many benefits over fossil fuels still hasn’t developed sufficiently to take over from fossil fuels. Many energy experts are even convinced that with current global development of renewables oil, coal, and natural gas will very likely remain dominant energy sources by the end of this century, and perhaps even longer.

Renewables are still not getting enough funds for their development, and fossil fuels lobbyists are also doing anything that is in their power to halt their development because they do not want to lose their dominant position in industry. Renewables are highly promising but it will sadly take a real miracle to turn this promise into reality.

Global Warming Caused By the Green-House Effect

Paul Sternberg Attorney Green-House Effect By George Christodoulou.

The green-house effect is the most important cause behind global warming. In fact global warming is known as the greenhouse effect. This phenomenon leads to an increase in the Earth temperature due to certain gases like CO2, nitrous oxide, and methane. These gases trap the energy from the sun and without them the heat would go back into space and Earth would be one massive iceberg. Since these gases warm the Earth, they are known as greenhouse gases.

In the last couple of decades, people have started using glass houses to grow plants in winter and these are called greenhouses. Typically, these houses will trap the heat from the sun. The glasses in the greenhouse let the light through and at the same time prevent the heat from escaping.

As a result, the greenhouse heats up to keep the plants alive in the winter. Similarly, the greenhouse gases in the Earths atmosphere work like the glass and prevent the heat from escaping. The sunlight enters piercing through the cloud of greenhouse gases and when it reaches the Earths surface, it is absorbed by land, water, and air.

After absorption the same energy is sent back into the atmosphere. Some of it remains trapped in the atmosphere due to the greenhouse gases and this energy makes the Earth warmer. Since there has been an increase in CO2 emissions in the last couple of decades, more and more heat is being absorbed in the atmosphere.

By: Kenneth Scott

There has been much discussion, both among experts and lay people, about the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is a term that refers to changes in the Earths atmospheric composition, which have been related to the warming of our planet. There is a growing amount of evidence that human activities, particularly those relating to the burning of fossil fuels like oil and coal, are major contributors to the greenhouse effect. The predicted consequences for the planet as a result of the greenhouse effect are extremely serious. They include major changes in the climate that will have an impact on food production and rising sea levels, which will put many coastal and other low-lying communities under water.

Additional information that we have learned about the planet Venus provide a frightening example of the greenhouse effect. Venus has a very dense atmosphere made up of gases. The planet has what has been described as a runaway greenhouse effect. It has surface temperature of about 800 degrees Fahrenheit.

Experts generally point to gases like carbon dioxide as the main contributors to the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide, which is a gas that is exhaled by everyone, can absorb infrared radiation. This type of radiation is heat that is radiating away from a warm object. During the day, the Earth is warmed by sunlight, and at night, the Earth cools off by radiating the heat back into space in the form of infrared radiation. Carbon dioxide, and other gases to some extent, absorb this radiation and limit its exit into space. Therefore, the natural cooling mechanism is thwarted.

While it may seem that eliminating the greenhouse effect would be the best strategy, this is not what we want to do. Water vapor represents another element in the heat-absorbing process. There is a great amount of water vapor in the atmosphere at all times. This is why we experience rain. We need the water vapor in the atmosphere to keep the Earth at its normal, comfortable temperature.

Temporary housing solutions are one of the fastest growing segments in the hotel industry today. While not exactly a hotel or motel; temporary housing offers attractive accommodations to those that are looking for a practical, efficient and affordable way to lodge. How can temporary housing help you? Here are just a few ways that temporary housing succeeds where hotels and motels inevitably come up short.

Temporary Housing: An Excellent Choice for Executives and Associates
For those businesses that require executives and associates to stay for long periods of time off- site, temporary housing makes sense. One of the reasons temporary housing is so popular with executives and associates is that they are not only affordable- costing about 50% less than some hotel stays, but also convenient and comfortable for your executives and associates. While hotels and motels might make sense for a short stay of a few days, for those that require stays of 7 days or more, temporary housing offers lodging that is much more comfortable and home like than traditional lodging choices.
Temporary housing includes fully furnished apartments that have kitchens, a separate room to spread out or do work, plenty of household accessories, a washer and dryer, TV, a couch, etc. A more comfortable environment means that an executive or associate can be much more productive in a home type setting, rather than living in a smaller hotel or motel room.

Temporary Housing: An Excellent Choice for Entrepreneurs
For entrepreneurs that want to make every dollar count, temporary housing offers exceptional value. You don’t have to sacrifice comfort when you choose to live in temporary housing. In fact, most entrepreneurs appreciate the home style amenities such as a kitchen and in- unit washer and dryer that allow them to live normally when on the road. Entrepreneurs that choose temporary housing no longer have to rely on costly room service or laundry service even for the most basic clothing items. For entrepreneurs, temporary housing offers an attractive work environment including an optional broadband internet connection, comfortable business furniture and communications services such as a phone line and fax machine to keep in close contact with clients.

Temporary Housing: Perfect for Couples and Families
While executives and entrepreneurs are a popular segment that utilize temporary housing, for those that are renovating a home or that are relocating and require housing for more than a week, temporary housing can make sense for the entire family. Temporary housing is perfect for both couples and families. Most units even allow pets and with lots of living space, your family doesn’t have to feel cooped up in a hotel or motel room for long stretches of time. Temporary housing is perfect for couples and families mainly due to the fact that many comforts of home are found in temporary housing units including; TV, DVD, a comfortable couch, fitness center, pool, in- unit laundry and much, much more.

Whether you are an executive, entrepreneur or family that requires high quality and high value lodging solutions, temporary housing delivers. Choice Corporate Housing, Inc. offers temporary housing solutions. For more information regarding temporary housing, please contact us.

Venus - A Runaway Greenhouse Effect?

Author: James Nash

The Earth and Venus are near each other in the Solar System, and are similar in size, density, and composition. Based on our understanding of the origin of the Solar System, we would expect that their initial atmospheres would have been rather similar. Yet the present atmospheres of the two planets could hardly be much more different than they are. How did this come to be? The reason is thought to lie in what is termed the “Runaway Greenhouse Effect”.

Sunlight falling on the surface of a planet is primarily in the visible part of the spectrum. However, the reflection of light from the surface tends to produce light of longer wavelength called infrared (IR) radiation (also known as radiant heat; IR radiation is the heat that we sense being radiated from a hot surface like a hot piece of metal).

Now, because of their molecular structures, certain gases like carbon dioxide and water vapor (and many others) have the property that they are essentially transparent to visible light but absorb IR radiation very strongly. Such compounds are sometimes termed greenhouse gases because, if they are present in a planetary atmosphere, they absorb the scattered IR radiation and tend to raise the temperature of the atmosphere by trapping solar energy. (The analogy with a real greenhouse is imperfect because the mechanism by which a greenhouse stays warm is different, but it is sufficiently good that the name “(Planetary) Greenhouse Effect” is now the common one for this phenomenon.)

The greenhouse effect occurs for all planetary atmospheres containing greenhouse gases, and is responsible for their being warmer than would be the case otherwise. The greenhouse effect by itself could not account for the conditions that we find on Venus. However, under certain conditions we believe the greenhouse effect can “run away”. For example, consider the case of a planet like the Earth. The Earth has enormous amounts of two greenhouse gases: water vapor and carbon dioxide. However, for the Earth most of the water and carbon dioxide are not in the atmosphere. The water is mostly in the oceans, and the carbon dioxide is mostly bound chemically in rocks made from compounds that chemists call carbonates (for example, limestone).

Now suppose we increased the effectiveness of greenhouse heating of the Earth’s atmosphere, for example by increasing the amount of solar radiation falling on it, or by increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (for example, by burning fossil fuels, which produce water vapor and carbon dioxide as byproducts of burning). We would then expect the temperature to rise in the atmosphere (assuming no other effects intervened—a big “if” in the realistic case since the atmosphere is complicated). This would be a greenhouse effect.

It would become a runaway greenhouse effect if the rising temperature approached the boiling point of water, because then the oceans would begin to convert to water vapor, the water vapor would increase the effectiveness of heat trapping and accelerate the greenhouse effect, this would cause the temperature to rise further, thus causing the oceans to evaporate faster, etc., etc. (This type of runaway is also called a “positive feedback loop”.) When the oceans were gone the atmosphere would finally stabilize at a much higher temperature and at much higher density, because all the water would now be in the atmosphere.

We can envision even a further runaway stage in this scenario. Suppose the preceding runaway raised the temperature so high that chemical reactions begin to occur that drive the carbon dioxide from the rocks into the atmosphere (the process is called sublimation; a few hundred degrees Celsius would be sufficient). Then another runaway would occur as the carbon dioxide feeding into the atmosphere would accelerate the heating, which would in turn accelerate the transfer of carbon dioxide from the rocks to the atmosphere.

The atmosphere would finally stablilize at a still higher temperature and pressure after all the carbon dioxide had been driven from the rocks. In fact, we believe that if this sequence were to take place on the Earth, the resulting temperature and pressure of the atmosphere left behind would not be very different from that for present-day Venus: the atmospheric termperature would be hundreds of degrees Celsius and the pressure would be maybe 100 times greater than it is today.

Thus, we believe that in the case of Venus the initial solar heating kept oceans from forming, or kept them from staying around if they did form, and the subsequent lack of rainfall and failure of plant life to evolve kept the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere rather than binding it in the rocks as is the case for the Earth; thus, Venus has an environmental disaster for an atmosphere.

What do greenhouses, glasshouses, and hothouses have in common? They all refer to a facility that controls the environment where specific crops are to be planted and harvested. In countries where harsh weather and climate conditions are manifest, greenhouses have revolutionized the green industry. By use of such a facility, one is able to control certain factors such as heat, temperature, and the like; creating or extending a growing season.

The Benefits of Greenhouses

A greenhouse traps heat and saves it for future use. Being able to grow one kind of plant, say out of season flowering shrubs, regardless of the external weather conditions is the main benefit of having a greenhouse. This in turn leads to the practical benefit of making certain crops, fruits, and flowers available all year round regardless of the season and weather.

A greenhouse gives you more control over the conditions that affect your plants’ growth. It gives you the ability to predict with a certain degree of accuracy how much crop you will harvest, unless of course something goes wrong in any of the various aspects and processes involved in its operations.

Because of these benefits, an enterprising individual can actually supply out of season flowers and crops and thus gain more profits because of it. The predictable plant production of greenhouse also gives a businessman a better handle on his business economics.

Construction of the Greenhouse

The materials commonly used for greenhouses include plastic and glass. These are specially modified materials that allow heat storage. Heat can then be allocated for future use so that the greenhouse can be maintained at a specific temperature all-year-round. Moreover, these structures have little or no openings because the warm air might escape and a drop in the temperature may lead to unfavorable results.

Greenhouse Limitations

Greenhouses need to comply with certain engineering specifications; this requires special design/build skills and specialized materials. Moreover, greenhouses need a lot of maintenance. Unlike normal gardening, greenhouse conditions must be strictly controlled and monitored. There are various systems for heating, cooling, circulation irrigation, and pest control. There may be specialized equipment for seeding, transplanting and potting. A greenhouses production numbers depend largely on how well the owner or the greenhouse operator has been able to maintain it at its optimal working condition.

Greenhouse for Hobbyists

Despite the costs and efforts needed to maintain a greenhouse, there are still a number of gardening aficionados who choose to maintain such facilities. While most people put up greenhouses for business purposes, there are hobbyists who maintain greenhouses for the pleasure of starting their own plants from seeds and cuttings, or to grow loved plants that would not survive the local climate outdoors. Greenhouses also make it possible for these gardening hobbyists to attend to their plants anytime they wish to do so.
